What’s involved in being a Coventry Hospital Radio volunteer?
CHR provides a service to the patients throughout University Hospital Coventry.
Keeping the station running takes a lot of work which includes ward visiting, request
collecting, fundraising activities, as well as operating the studio equipment and presenting
programmes.
What skills do I need?
You should be able to communicate clearly.
It helps if you are outgoing and enjoy meeting people, especially for collecting requests or
helping with fundraising.
You don’t have to be an expert in any field, all we ask is a willingness to learn, be part of
a team and be able to make a regular minimum commitment of at least 12 months to
Coventry Hospital Radio.Do I have to present a programme?
Most members who join CHR want to be a presenter,
but don’t worry if you don't as there are other roles within the radio.
You’ll be equally welcome if you just want to visit the wards, chat to the
patients and collect requests or help with the music library.
How much time will I have to give?
Once you have been allocated a regular time slot
we ask that you make it a commitment each week,
Plus there may be fundraising events or outside
broadcasts at weekends.
Presenting a show doesn’t just mean turning up at the studio and going on air, it means
visiting the wards to collect requests, finding the requests in the library, presenting a
programme, and putting everything away afterwards.
Is there an age limit? Coventry Hospital Radio requires that members are 16 and over.
Do we offer Work Experience?
Sorry but due to the station being empty on occasions
Coventry Hospital Radio cannot offer short term
Work Experience Placements.
What will it cost?
The annual membership fee at Coventry Hospital Radio is currently £20 a year (£10 for
students, retired and those in receipt of benefits).
What training is there?
Three months full training is provided for whichever role you wish to undertake at
Coventry Hospital Radio
Will hospital broadcasting help my career?
Any voluntary work will benefit your CV and impress a future employer (and that applies
to any job, not just the media), but nothing is guaranteed and for every one who's gone on
into a job in radio there are hundreds who haven't.
However, it’s all good experience - many professional broadcasters started in hospital
radio and CHR will be happy to share our skills with you as long as you are happy
to support a range of our stations activities.
